A young woman about 19 years of age fell into the harbour from Quaystreet jetty last night, under circumstances rather extraordinary. The accident happened between 11 and 12 o'clock, and was first discovered by the Northern Company's night watchman, who ran on board the Kanieri for a lifebelt, which he threw to the woman. She failed to secure the float, whereupon the watchman ran to the wharf to apprise the people of the Apouri, which was on the point of sailing. The second officer, Mr Adolphus Parris, heard the woman's screams, and rushing on deck picked up a heaving line. Mr Parris pro- . ceeded in the direction whence the screams came. The young lady was struggling in the water, and was being carried under the wharf. Mr Parris threw the coil of rope about her and pulled in the slack. The woman caught the rope with her hands. After about three minutes, states Mr Parris, a orowd came down the wharf. One young fellow jumped overboard, and one of H.M.S. Pioneer's boats came to the rescue. Both the young man and the young lady were picked up by the boat, and landed safely on the man-o'-waf steps. Hokitika, May 29. The daughter of W. Goodfellow, aged five, received very severe injuries to-day through her clothes catching fire. There are no hopes of her recovery. Christchurch, May 29. The child'B parents occupy rooms at the top of the building, and the child was playing on the roof, which is walled in. She was chasing a cat over the roof ,and stepped on an unprotected skylight and fell through the glass for a distance of 30 feet into an empty room below. She was picked up unconscious and taken to the hospital. There is very little cut or injury externally, but it is feared her spine is hurt badly, and may be permanently crippled.
