♦ [PBB PflU-88 ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, May 27. A conference of delegates from local bodies was held to-day to consider the increase in the District Hospital estimates from £19,750 in 1906 to £27,100 in 1907. This is an increase of 40 per cent. The number of patients increased by 10 per cent., and it was decided, "That the Government be approached and asked to make the Hospital Trustees directly responsible to the local bodies; also that the Government be represented on the Board of Trustees, and that the rating he upon a population bftSlß*" At a meeting of citizens tolnight at the Mayor's room, it was decided to accord Sir J. G. Ward a public reception on his return to WeUington. Henry Peacock, an engraver, was to-day committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge of having committed a criminal offence against his seventeen-year-old daughter. Counsel for accused asked for bail. He stated that the next Criminal Sessions did not come on until August, and it would be a hardship on the accused to remain in custody until then. The police opposed the application, aUeging that it would be dangerous for the- accused to be at large, as he had threatened to shoot his daughter if she told her mother about his conduct. The Court refused the application. Accused was then charged with having in his possession on May 21st two moulds intended to make a resemblance of both sides of a half-sov-ereign and a half-crown respectively. A remand was granted until Friday. Gore, May 27. A drowning accident, which ' involved the loss of a.3-horse team, and the narrow escape of the driver, a man named Arthur James, occurred to-day. . In attempting to ford the Waikaka river, which is in flood, the team got into difficulties. The driver, in an unsucessful attempt to cut the shatter free, nearly lost his life, but managed to struggle to the bank. The team was valued at over £100. Ashburton, May 27. At a meeting of the General Committee to-night, October 9th, (Labor Day) and 10th were fixed on which to hold a second-class Band Contest here. It was resolved to cable Home for music for the test. Invercargiil, May 27. Three boys went out duck shooting in the Estuary yesterday. They planted at daylight and when the tide rose they were cut off, and had to stay all day in the water, which at its height was up to their necks. They sot home much exhausted. Thames, May 27. A case wherein the question was as to what constitutes a public place came before the Court when two men were charged wiht disorderly conduct in the main passage of a hotel. Counsel held that a public place was a public bar. The definition of a public place was controlled by the words "as of right." Only persons seeking accommodation or refreshment had a right in the passage. If a main passage of a hotel was a public place, the whole hotel was so. The Bench held the contention to be a good one, and dismissed the information, holdthat the offence, if any, had not been committed in a public place.
