Piet Ferriera, the leader of the late Cape raid, and four other participants have been sentenced to death at Kimberley. Two of them, named Potgiieter and Retief, have been recommended to mercy, as they alleged that the Gorman captain, Siebert, had induced them to cross the frontier and create a diversion for Germany's benefit, for which tnev received £2000. Captain Siebert flatly contradicted their statements.
