Now that potatoes are so high heads of families should turn their attention to rice and oatmeal as substitutes. Of course the initial difficulty is that very few housewives know how to cook rice or to make oatmeal porridge and cakes, but after a few experiments they would soon become expert and thus save a lot of money. A resident of Paikakariki named James Walker missed the last train from Wellington on Saturday night and started to walk home. By some mischance he fell through one of the bridges, a distance of £0 feet, and broke the bone of the pelvis, and also bit his tongue in two. He was lying where he fell till Monday morning, when he was found by Mr James Barr, one of the Manawatu Company's drivers. He now lies in a precarious condition in the "Wellington Hospital. We have been afforded an opportunity of inspecting Mr F. Towler's large display of early tomato plants of all varieties. It can be safely said that these plants are the healthiest and best which we have seen offered for sale this season. Mr Towler makes a special feature of cultivating these plants, so that they are strong and adapted Tor transplanting into any soil. He has also a number of the latest varieties, including the Mikado. Those who are interested in tomato culture should avail themselves of an opportunity of inspecting Mr Towler's premises before purchasing elsewhere. Kinsella. the Chief Dairy Commissioner, to a Post representative •yesterday morning, "are losing over £1,000,000 a year through not weeding out their unprofitable dairy stock." Mr Kinsella went on to say that it was astonishing how many cows there were in the Colony which were not worth keeping, and he strongly advocated the adoption of the Canadian and Danish Bystem of testing herds to ascertain which animals should be killed off. Both Canada and Denmark have numerous testing associations, and their establishment has been productive of splendid results. Judge Casey, of Victoria, who has just returned from a visit to the Far East, relates that a clever cartoon appeared in the Shanghai Sketch, referring to the Russian love of sinking British ships during the war. "Is she arme:i ?" asked the admiral. "No, your Excellency," replied the lieutenant : " she is just a British merchant steamer." " Then serve out double rations of grog and clear the ship for action," exclaimed the admiral. Evidently humor and honesty are not yet defunct virtues (says the Christchurch Press).
