The upper and middle classes, cornmercers and financiers, are strangely silent, evidently disappointed, and the markets reflect their dejection. Prices have sharply declined. Only one Tokio newspaper supports the treaty. The others declare it is au insult to the nation, and the bitterest do3e Japan was ever asked to swallow.
