BURGLARIES IN AUCKLAND.
. » Telegraph, Frees Association Copyright Auckland, Thiß Day. About midnight on Saturday Constable Skinner, hearing a suspicious noiso in tho doorway of tho shop of Wm. Olarko, chemist, in Victoria street, accosted v man there, who asserted he was the owner of tho premises. The constable discovered that the door had been forced, and closed with tho man, and after a desperate struggle handcuffed him. The prisoner was subsequently taken to tho lock-up, and gave the name of George Ashton. An unsuccessful attempt was made to burglarise tho Post Office at tho Strand Arcado in Qucon Street, on Friday night. A most daring robbery occurred in a house tenanted by Bandmaster Hunter, who was absent, leaving his wifo and two daughters homo. During tho night Mrs Hunter saw a figure walk straight to a basket containing £5 or £6, and jewellery valued at £10. It seized it and rushed away. She jumped out of bed, but the burglar bad left the doors open and effected an easy retreat. The basket, minus tho money, with the jewellery untouched, was found in an adjacent yard.
