CONSTABLE WHITEHOUSE.

» _ We learn from the Daily News, Taranaki, that on Tuesday the 3rd inst. Constable Whitehouse, on the eve of his departure from Normanby for Feilding, a considerable number of friends assembled at Mr F. S. Canning's office to say good-bye and wish Mr and Mrs Whitehouse Godspeed. Mr Canning who occupied the chair, after explaining the object of the gathering, complimented Constable Whitehouse on the fearless and impartial manner in which he had done his duty. He then presented him, on behalf of Mrs Whitehouse, with a very handsome marble eight day clock. Inscribed on a silver plate on the front of the clock, was the following : — " Presented to Mrs E. J. Whitehouse, from Normanby friends, June 3rd, 1902." Constable Whitehouse, in reply on behalf of Mrs Whitehouse, returned thanks for the handsome present, which he was sure would be highly valued. He was very thankful for the complimentary remarks regarding himself. During his sojourn at Normanby he had been well treated, and he regretted parting from the many friends he and Mrs Whitehouse had made. He was especially thankful to Mr Canning, who had helped him greatly with his advice and assistance, and should always look back to his stay in Normanby with very great pleasure. After a pleasant hour, the meeting terminated with a vote or thanks to the chairman.
