PROPOSED NEW RAILWAY.

(Telegraph Prssa Association.) Wellington, This Day. Proposals have been made before the Minister of Railways tbat the Government should construct a railway from a point beet ween Marton and Halcombe to a point on the Foxton branch line thence to Waikane by way of Levin across to the existing Government line at the Upper Hutt. It is claimed this work saves nine miles in comparison with the present Rimutaka route. The estimated cost is from £450,000 to £500,000. To day's N.Z Times says : -Im portant communications are passing between the directors of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company and the Government in regard to tbe purchase of the line, both parties being anxious to get tbe other to take the ioi iative in naming a price, but so far, without definite result. The Manawatu Sale and Purchase Empowering Act, which enabled the Government to emer into an agreement to purchase the line, expired yesterday. Negotiations for tbe future will probably be under tbe conditions of the first Act. It is confidently expected that the present negotiations will prove fruitful, aDd a settlement of tbe terms may be announced any day.
