The Tariff Committee has placed a 10 per cent duty on empty wine and beer bottles, and 2d a dozen on bottles containing goods not exceeding nine fluid ounces if not subject to ad valorem duty. Hickory spokes are made free. They are now discussing Mr Manifold's proposal to admit all New Zealand undressed pine free. It was urged it would only come into competition with timber used in the manufacture of butter boxes, and there was not sufficient timber produced in Queensland to meet requirements. This Day. The Tariff Committee finally decided to admit undressed N.Z. white and kauri pine free, the Government being defeated by one vote.
