Shire Horses.
I — • — In view of the Shire colts imported to this district by Mr Greenhow, the following will be of interest : — There appears to be no limit to the demand for the best types of the Shire horse. At Lord Llangattock's recent sale at Hendre 48 horses were sold, and only twelve of them made less than a hun- ; dred guineas each, the top price being 630 guineas, and the average per head 1 £226. Six foals were included in the number sold, and the average price is all the more remarkable from the fact that there was no extremely high top rate, 650 guineas having been often exceeded. Lord Llangattock's has beaten the record in respect of the average for any considerable number of the Shire horses; but, considering the number sold, the average of £224 7s 9d each for 54 animals, made at the Prince of Wales' sale about three years ago, must still be regarded as the I greatest achievement of its kind. Mr Jamies Eadie, of Barrow Hall, Derby, has parted with his famous Shire geldings Bardon Extraordinary and Barrow Farmer for the unprecedented price of £472 10s the pair, the buyer being Mr R. Ward, Cheshire. Commenting on this sale the Field says : — This, of course, is a fancy figure for animals of a class useless for breeding purposes A but its realisation is not without aniseful lesson for breeders of Shires. Wo would not advise farmers to set out with the idea that prices of this calibre await them, but less than half the figure quoted would pay the producer handsomely, and it is safe to assert that 100 guineas per head is within reach of anyone who places on the market geldings approaching the stamp of the invincible pair named.
