Mail Services.
Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright Wellington. January 10. The Postmaster-Gcneral'says doubtless an ofi'er will be made to get tbe Vancouver steamers to make New Zealand a place of call. We will require, in bis opinion, both the Van- ' couver and 'Frisco services, and a | rivalry between the two lines would i have a healthy effect. The inclusion iof New Zealand in the Vancouver ' route would necessitate the dropping . of the Queensland connection to ensure • anything like a speedy mail service. The subsidy now paid by Canada, j Queensland and New South Wales "is, 1 in round figures, £40,000 per annum, and the contract will not expire till 1902. If reasonable terms are proposed he has no doubt the Government will favorably consider them. Notwithstanding the effects of the American navigation law, Mr Ward thinks New Zealand should continue to maintain the 'Frisco line.
