THE BUBONIC PLAGUE.
TO TUX EDITOR. Sir, — Our Government has strongly urged the various proper local authorities to take all necessary precautions against the spread of that awful scourge which has now arrived at our doors. Ido not know whether our " City Fathers " (?; propose to take any steps in the matter, but the work to be done seems to me to arrange itself under ths following heads : —1. Appointment of health officer (a stranger to tha district) who thoroughly understands his work and will carry it out without fear and without favour, and, in this connection, it seems tome absurd to say that liquid containing matter certain to cause a menacing offence is not; offensive. 2 Destruction by tire in a safe place of all rubbish and litter. 3. Destruction of all rats other than by poison. 4 bupplv of disinfectants at cost price, and free of charge where expedient. 5. Supply of dry earth to people not having it -iccessible. 0. Draiuage of all surface water, allowing none to remain stagnant) as it does at the present time. 7, Arrangements for immediate isolation should any case unhappily occur amongst us. Hoping that our Borough Council will not fail to recognise its great responsibility at the present juncture, but will carry the work out thoroughly and put its foot down firmly, I ana, etc. James J, Bag n all.
