The Government is blamed for not having a sufficiently strong garrison at Candia for several months past. Five hundred British reinforcements arrived off Candia, but it was impose sible for tbem to land, owing to rough weather. Tbere is increasing evidence of com plicity of the Turkish authorities. Djevad Pasba throws the responsi bility on tbe Basbi Bazouks, September 11. Fifty British refugees were burned to death in tbe British Consulate at Candia, including tbe Consul's daughter and her infant. The mob threw tbe Consul into tbe fire, sboutiug " Let England save you."
