Amateur Concert

■o - ■ ■ A conceit was given in the Assembly Rooms last evening by the Misses Birdie Butler and Olphert, of Auckland, as> sisted by local amatenrs, half the pro* ceeds being devoted towardn the funds of the FeUding Library. There was not a large attendance. Miss .Butler, who possesses a rich soprano voice, sang " Asthore " and " The Holy City," the latter of which was encored, and 11 Whisper and I shall hear," was given in response ; she also took part in the duet "Life's Dream is O'er" with Miss Chamberlain, which was very nicely rendered. Miss Olphert re* cited "Phillip's First Baby" and " Mary Queen of Scots." Mrs James played two pianoforte selections very skilfully. Miss Gould sang " Bid me to Love," and Mrs Dickson gave "Pray for Me " ; Miss Chamberlain sang " Dear Heart," and Mr J. Greenwood sang, 'The Wolf ' ; Mr S. Moore played a pianoforte solo and Mr M. S. Brunette two selections on the clarionette. Mr H. Giesen scored a success with the song " The Skipper " and had to respond to a well deserved and imperative encore. Each part was opened with selections by an orchestra under the leadership of Mr R. F. Haybittle. The accompaniments were played by Misses Butler, Gould, Hamilton, and Mr Moore. Most of the items were well rendered, and deserving of a better attendance. At the conclusion of the concert, Mr J. H. Stevens, chairman of the Library Committe, thanked the performers on behalf of the committee for having arranged the concert, and regretted there was not a larger attendance.
