A Massacred Expedition.
o— — — (Per Press Association). j^ondon, Jan. 12. Further particulars received from Bonny show that Consul Phillips' ex pedition was undertaken with the object of removing obstacles to trade. The party consisted of nine unarmed Britishs ers and two hundred and fifty native carriers. The members of the expedN tion were enticed into the forest for the purpose of holding a parley with the natives when tlie attaok was made. So far as is known only seven carriers escaped. Later. R. D. Moore, vice-consul of the Niger Protectorate, at present on a visit to London, returns to the Niger district immediately. A number of officers sail on Saturday to replace those killed. A punitive expedition is being organ« ised. The Niger Company is unablo to con« trol the tribes unless Great Britain sends a gunboat.
