Serious Bush Fires.
(Per Press Association) Wellington, January 13. Tlie present bush fires in the Wairarapa district arc the worst ever known there and the damage can as yet hardly be estimated. Fires are still racing at Mangamahoc, Mikomiki, Hastwcll, the Stirling Settlement, To Waraiti, and other smaller places. At Stirling there is great danger of all the settlers' houses being destroyed. Every assistance possible is being rendered to the un fortunate settlers, but it is feared that a good many of them will be ruined. Masterton, Jan. 18. At Parkville, near Eketahuna, the fires arc spreading. Children are being scut from the back blocks into Eketahuna. Many of the settlers' homesteads are in great danger. This Day. The bush fires arc still spreading, j Heavy losses in grass, fencing, etc., are reported from all sides. The residence of J. C. Nicholls, near Eketahuna, was totally destroj'ed last night. Sheep in larpe numbers are being sent away.
