County Council Conference.
(Per Press Association). Wellington, August 9. Tbe County Conference also passed the following resolutions : — That it is desirable valuation for rating be car* ried out by and at the cost of the general Government ; That the Land Act be so amended that when Crown land is leased by the Land Board on whatever tenure and forfeited, unpaid rates be a first charge on tho land ; That tbe local bodies should be given power to levy rates on the unimproved values ; That power should be given to County Councils to levy (in addition to the maximum throe farthings rate) a general rate not to exceed one eighth of a penny in the £, for the purpose of creating a fund for the restoration of bridges on County roads, such funds to be invested by the Councils in the Public Trust Funds or other Government securi ties. A motion that Councils should be given "power to strike a rato of one farthing for restoration of bridges was lost by the casting vote of the Chairman. County Council Conference passed the following resolutions: —That provision be made to compel owners to clear gorso to the full width of the road ; That a clause be added to the Counties Act enabling a County to 1 procure from a Municipal Corporation ( any information it may require, the same as Road and Town Boards ; That the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act j be repealed ; That County licenses be j issued to hawkers according to differ- ; 1 ent classes. The following motions were rejected ;— To consolidate loans to local bodies ; exempting Counties from , issuing collars and badges under the 1 Dog Registration Act ; approving extension of the control of town districts over main roads. .That provision be made for rating • Native lands on the same basis as European ; That metal for country roads be carried on the Government ' railways at a nominal ooat ; That in ; cases of cash purchasers of lands not [ fronting roads constructed by Government previous to sale, one-third of the price be dealt with as though sold under lease in perpetuity and deposit 1 paid for survey fees and afterwards I credited for rent, one-third be handed , over to the local bodies interested. , W llington.
