Pohangina Notes.
[_fkom our own correspondent J On Sunday morning when Mrs Selby, accompanied by her two daughters, was driving on the Valley road near Mr Durling's property, the horse stumbled and fell, receiving a cut above its right ej'e and injuring both knees. The occupants of the vehicle were thrown out, but beyond a severe shaking and the natural alarm they felt at the incident they experienced no evil consequences. Ample assistance was soon at hand and the ladies returned home. The Pohangina river is now very unsafe for traffic, owiug to the floods having created a number of quicksands, while all the fords are altered. Many settlers have lost whole acres of grass land owing to tbe slips, and others ou the flat from the silt and rubbish deposited. lam told that when the waters receded quite a number of trout and rcls were found stranded. The roads are now pretty clear and open for traffic again. No. 1 Ward is very expeusive owing to the number of siclliugs, and the repairs to damages will cost the Board a lot of money. I hear that Mr Roberts iutends to shift his house further back from the river, and several others arc contemplating following his example. This will entail considerable expense, which, added to the cost of miles of fencing which were washed away, makes a heavj' total of loss to this new settlement. The question now being asked is, " Are wo acting wisely in clearing every stick of bush off the land ?
