Parliament adjourned to-day until 22nd January. The Daily News states that Sir Henry James, Q.C., M.P., who was one of the leading counsel for The Times in the Parnell Commission, has been created a life peer and Judge of the Appeal Court. The wool market is steady, with an ; improvement in prices. New Yoke, December 9. The Indians are becoming cowed, and if relieved of starvation will probably quiet down. A panic has taken place on the New York Stock Exchange, and several large failures are announced. Commercial paper has been refused on all sides, and an attempt made to rely on currency alone. New York is drawing half a million ot gold from the Bank of England, and one million from the Bank of France. St. Petersburg, December 8. The Grand _>uke Nicholas, uncle of the Czar, is incurably insane. Lisbon, December 8. It is asserted that the English were the aggressors in the fracas at Matacas which led to the British flag being pulled down. Washington, December 8It is hoped the Indians in the Northwest will be pacified without further trouble. Mr William Windom, Secretary of the Treasury, declares that during his tenure of Office he has circulated 100,000,000, silver dollars without effect, and he refuses to permit the Treasury to become bankrupt. ' It is reported King Kalakaua of the Hawaiian Islands will shortly pay a visit to Washington, with a view of selling the islands to the United States Government.
