♦ The wool sales at Antwerp will open on Monday week. Butter waß quoted at lOd per ft at Christchurch on December 81, 1888. Three recruits were added to the ranks of the Manchester Rifles this week. Volunteers are reminded of the inspection parade to be held on Monday evening. A hawker, named Hollyman, committed suicide at Petone on Thursday night by blowing out his brains. There was completed lately in Paris an artesian well 2400 feet in depth, which has taken twenty -two years to sink. The Napier News says : — " We feel sorry for Mr Thomas Tanner, M.H.R." It would be interesting to know how Mr Tanner feels for the Napier News ! The assistant at the Telegraph office, Mr Dixon, has gone on a well deserved holiday. He is relieved by Mr Chieholm, who was stationed here a few years ago. It may interest brethren of the Masonic Craft to know that our future Governor, the Earl of Onslow, is a Past Grand Warden of England. Kilrain, the pugilist, has accepted a challenge from J. L. Sullivan to fight in a 24ft ring for 10,OOOdols a-side and the championship of the world. Mr J. B. Harcourt has commenced business in Wellington as an auctioneer and commission agent under the style of Harcourt and Co. We wißh the new firm every success. Mr James Duigan is editing the Wanganui Chronicle in the absence of Mr Carson, who has gone to Melbourne to purchase new plant and machinery to replace that destroyed by fire. The Maori football team were defeated at Bradford by a goal and a try to a try. Fifteen thousand people witnessed the match, and the greatest interest was taken in it. They beat Leeds Parish Church Club by 2 goals to 3 tries.

Cobbe & Darragh have for sale, cheap, a new double Buggy, made by Eouse and Harald, Wellington. The Secretary of the Palmerston Caledonian Sports informs us that their meeting on New Year's Day not only paid all expenses, but wiped off a liability of .£l3 from last year. He also says the Feilding Band has been praised on all sides for their excellent playing on that occasion. Thursday the 10th instant will be a busy time in Feilding. The Resident Magistrate's Court, Manchester Highway Board, P. R. Jackson and Co.'s sale, meeting of Library Committee at Council chambers, and of members of the Feilding Club at Hastie's Hotel. The railway construction branch of the Public Works Department yet remains practically untouched, pending the long expected appointment of the Board of Railway Commissioners, t> whose charge will be transferred all matters connected with railway construction so soon as the Commissioners shall have been appointed. — N.Z. Times. The annual sale of thoroughbred yearlings from the New Zealand Stud Company's estate, Sylvia Park, Auckland, was held on Thursday. There was a very large attendance, including Messrs G. G. Stead, P. Butler, D. O'Brien, and S. H. Gollan. The highest priced yearling was a colt by Nordenfeldt — Locket, purchased for 500 guineas by Mr Stead. Several yearlings by Somnus was submitted to auction, a bay filly by Somnus — Yatterina fetching 70 guineas. The leech or slug that attacks the leaves of several fruit trees, viz., pears, plums, quince, cherry, &c, are now becoming numerous Measures should at once be taken to destroy them in order to proserve the leaves of the trees. Healthy leaves are essential to the maintenance of the treee, and proper development of its fruit. The best and most effective measure to destroy the leech is to syriuge the trees with hellebore, using a dessert spoonful to an ordinary bucket of water. To bring out the full streugth of the hellebore the powder should be mixed with water some hours before using. The first of the season's wool sales was held at Dunedin on Thursday last, when some of the brokers sold. There was the largest gathering ever seen at any wool sale held there including many new to this market, and comprising representatives of English and American manufacturers. There was spirited competition, although bidding was somewhat irregular, and prices ruled Id to l£d higher than at the corresponding period of last year. Fine half-breds in light condition met with special favour. Greasy crossbred ranged from 7£d to ll^d; greasy halfbred, from B^d to lOgd ; greasy merino, from 8d to 10£ d ; greasy pieces, from s£d to 7|d ; greasy locks, from 2£d to s£d. The abolition of the Public Works Department is now virtually accomplished. All that remains is a mere remnant awaiting the final dissolution, which is dependent upon certain other arrangements not yet completed. From the 2nd instant, as the first working day of the New Year, the Lands and Survey Department took over the charge of the roads and bridges of the Colony, and of the relations of the Public Works Department with local bodies in these respects. A circular will be issued immediately to all local bodies informing them of the change, and directing them to communicate with the Lands Department iv futuro with reference to those matters. The Lands Department has also taken over the " unemployed" and their management, which has hitherto been in the hands of the Public Works authorities, and a circular (similar to that relating to the roads and bridges; will be issued intimating to the local bodies the alteration which has been made. — N.Z.
