ACCLIMAIISAtION SOCIETIES
TO TBE EDITOR OF THE STAtt.
Sibj — In last Saturday's Advocate "Quail" writes on acclimatisation matters in a sensible manner, and though nojb. endorsing all he propounds I think he is to be commended for having started the. ball rolling. The great stumbling block in my estimation is want of unity, and until the several: Acclimatisation Societies are agreed as to their wants, so long will, the Government be perplexed. The wisest thing to do is to have a meeting of the societies, say two members of said societies,: and let them agree as to the wants of this coast, and then either; send delegates to the Assembly, or more, if possible, the sev.eral members of .their districts. The proclaiming hares no longer game was decidedly premature, and should be revoked; immediately. The suggestion to qompel everyone in pursuit of game, whether native or imported, to have a license, is also a good one, but I believe there are difficulties as to the Maoris which stand in the way. That the Act requires amending everyone that has had anything to do with Acclimatisation.. Societies knows well; but unfortunately no two societies recommend the same course to the Government, consequently the Act remains a dead letter. If anything is to be done it must be done at once.— l am, &c,
