The Captain Cain Case
[PER UNITKD PBKSB ASSOCIATION.! Dunkdin. January 25. Wm. Arthur Meason gave evidence of being on several occasions at Captaiu Cain's house before his death, and Captain Cain complained of his whisky disagreeing with him. Francis W. Stubbs said he frequently visited Cain during his last illness, and for some time after the 1 3 th January sat up alternate nights with him. Captain Caiu never slept long, aud he always had something wben he awoke. Gave him custards, jelly, and champagne. The custards and jellies never seemed to disagree with him, but he knew him to be sick after the champagne. Had seen him sick after taking whisky on several occasions, and ouce or twice after taking medicine. Witness and Kay sat up with Cain on the night he died. He had spells of sleep of about half an hour. Captain Cain slept till 12.30 when they noticed a change in his breathing. They called Mrs Newton and Miss Gillon. The Captain had an attack of coughing, and seemed to revive, and he was taken up, and after being made comfortable, put to bed again when he slept till witness left at 6 a.m. He (witness) was told he never woke from tbat sleep. So far as witness could recollect Cain was not sick at all that evening. • anuary 26. Stubbs, re-caUed, said he gave Capt Cain brandy, not champagne, and it made him sick immediately. Hall was in the room at the time. He only stayed a minute. Was positive Captain Cain was also sick after taking whiskey, not after champagne. Kay, who nursed Cain, said Hall was a constant visitor after the New Year. He never stayed inside the room | while Hall was there, as he understood he had business with Capt Cain. This Day. Dr Mclniyre, cross-examined, said he never ordered Cain quantities of champagne. Would have thought a pint to two quarts enough in 24 hours, with a little stronger stimulants occasionally. Be never really hoped for his recovery. —— — — ■_■■ 1 Feilding School Committee *. A meeting of the above Committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Present — Messrs Watts (chairman), Worsfold, Rutherford, & Lankshear. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The master's usual monthly report was read as follows : — Average Roll : Boys, 152; Girls, 148; Total, 300, Average Attendance : Boys, 86; Girls, 83 ; Total, 169. After considerable discussion it waa resolved to make an effort to get up the annual treat and distribution of prizes, the same to take place about ' the 25th of February, and that the town be canvassed for subscriptions. Resolved, That Mr Dowling be asked to seleot eight oi the pupils to take subsoription lists for the above. Accounts amounting to £1 Is was passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
