The Local Election

"♦ The contest for the Manawatu seat, which at one time promised to be but a tame one, now appears likely to turn out one of the hottest of the whole general elections. In opposition to Mr Macabthub who is really the " one man terrible," the names of A. Bubb and Donald F bases are announced, while rumour has it that Dr Bulleb and Mr G. W. Russell will try and " slip in " between the great combatants. Of course they are free to make the attempt. We do not think that Mr Bvbb'h canditature will secure him many votes. The chances of Dr Bulleb and Mr G. W. Russell are about on a par, each gentleman being held in about the same esteem in the Manawatu. The real contest will be between Mr Macabthub and Mr Donald Fbaseb. Mr Macabthub will muster round him all of those who have a real desire to see the district well and ably represented, and who to attain that end will sink all personal feeling. Mr Fbaseb will have a following sttached to him with the ties of relationship, and the esteem created by many years knowledge of his probity and worth. Mr Fbaseb has never, that we are aware of, taken any active or prominent part in public life. He was once before defeated in a contest for a seat in the House, and seems determined to enjoy a similar experience a second time. At the present juncture Manawatu needs a man who will be more than a mere voting member. We know from the past what Mr Macabthub is capable of doing as a public man. All the other candidates are either inexperienced or behind the times.
