Frozen Meat Trade
The Sydney Morning Herald s-ys: — " A telegram fr«)m London, in our columns of Friday last, announced that frozen meat from New Zea ! and ' bad rea i»ed 5d to 6d per pound. At the present moment in Sydney private consumers are paying: as much as 84 per pound and even more tor beef, and 6d for the best j >;nts of mutton No official announcement, as far as wo know, has been made of the profits on a shipment of frozen meat ; but assuming, for the sake of argument, that there is a margin of a penny a pound left after paying c»sts of freight and insurance — including* of course, special charges for refrigerating*! — it *eemf> tolerably evident that there is a much nearer and more lucrative market for frozen meat from New Zealand in Sydney than in London. According- to some computations this colony has lost about 10.000.000 sheep out of 30,000.000 in the lute drought. Some runs have been almost denuded of their flocks, aud there must necessarily be a larjre demand for stock to replace them. Prices will therefore rule high for some time to come in the Sydney narkets for meat for consumption, since our ordinary sources of supply have been literally dried up. Now is the time, then, for New Z alund to come to the re*cue of her sister colony and at the same time benefit herself. Her* prime New Zpaland mutton would probably find a ready wile an<i appreciative buyers, both wholesale and retail. VI c are already drawing meat from Victoria, cannot w* also draw it from New Zea'imd V* It certainly would he better to send mutton to tNydnHy it only 5d per H», could be obtained for it, than to yrow wheat tor which there see us to I)R no market We have no doubt this will be inquired into and a new opening for our frozen meat thus be
