SPORTING
Notes by " Pbocyon." The Rangitikei Hunt Club's Meeting, to be held to-morrow, promises to be the most successful they have yet held, the entrieß and acceptances being very good. It only wants fine j weather to bring together a large gathering of the public. All the horses engaged in the " big event"— the Rangitikei Hunt Club Handicap Steeplechase — have accepted, and it ought to be an intereating race, as the horses are very fairly brought together (on paper). My fancy of the five engaged is Patent Safety, and he should, I think, win, with Demon and Bradlaugh next in order. However, it being a heavy course at any time, and a fair chance of rain, it is quite possible that Bradlaugh's jumping will prove better to back than the superior pace of the others. It is a pity the handicapper's opinions of Abolition's capabilities are not at all likely to agree with his owner's— so that the horse will almost certainly '' be amongst the scratched ones in tfce Bracelet ; 18st. is too much to ask a horse of his class to carry round such a course, to Bay nothing of racing with it. Rangatira, at 125t.,. reads much better, and as the mare will start fresh in this event she should have a very good chance of winning. Demon, Aroha, Patent Safety, and Ebony are all in the previous race, and as it is not likely that any of them will be in sufficiently good trim to race against fresh horses after having gone the Handicap distanoe, I must dismiss them as having but a poor show. The best treated horse in the raco is Snyder, who, if well ridden, will carry the lOst. 41b. into a very prominent position, if not the first of all. Spartan is a nag that can and will jump and The Masher has a reputation — without having earned it though, I think. When the race ia over I expect to see Snyder 1, Rangatira 2, and Spartan 3. Of the six Maidens, Flying Pish, if in anything like fettle, should win as he likes, and the Hunter's Flat Race should be a good thing for Martini (what rot it is altering a horse's name as tnis horse's is ; Kelpie was a very good name for him, and one he was just as likely to win with as Martini), though should Germame have improved much, she might trouble the nW.kv littlfl prfiv At the finish.
