On Thursday last a young man named Pawson, who works as a millhand at Mr Adsctt's sawmill, Taonui, had one of hi" hands badly smashed. The Colonial Secretary, tho lion Tlios. Dirk, is somewhat indisposed, and is consequently unable to attend to his official duties. Fisher's Comedy Troupe will appear nt tlio Town Hall this evening. As this company is a favorite one with the Feilding people, we expect to see a good house. The twenty- third half-yearly report of the Queensland National Bunk shows the net profits of the past half-year were £•18,000. It was stated by the Chairman of the Horowhenua Licensing Committee, at a meeting held at Foxton last week, that an attempt would be made in Foxton to reduce tho number of licensed houses duriug the ensuing year. A man named Grantham York was arrested in Masterton a few days ago, charged with disobeying a maintenance order issued from Patea. He paid his arrears and was discharged. Ho ovidently did not " want to go homo" Tenders for metalling 42 chains of ( "hurdicr street will close at the Borough Council Office at 4 p.m. on Thursday, and tenders for metalling portions of Pohangina, Ashurst, and Bunnvthorpe roads will close at tho Oroua County Council Office to-morrow at noon. By an advertisement on our third page, it will be seen that the Juvenile Temple of Good Templars, to which wo have made frequent allusion, is now almost complete, and only awaits tho installation of officers, which will take place on Saturday nent. Wo congratulate the promoters on their well-directed efforts. Tho Autumn Show of the Feilding Horticultural Society will be held in the Town Hall to-morrow. We understand that tho entries are very numerous, and that the show is likely to be the most successful tho society has yet held. Intending exhibitors will please noto that all exhibits must be delivered at the Hall before 10 a.m. It is always a pleasant task to chionicle any fact which exhibits push and energy on tho part of any of our settlers. Mr Jackman, a farmer on tho Awahuri Road, delivered his first loads of this season's wheat, at Mr Chamberlain's flour mill on Saturday last. It is worthy of note that Mr Jackmnn's grain was also the first thrashed and delivered last yenr. The funeral of the lato Sir Eobert Douglas took place on Saturday after* noon. It was strictly private, no regular intimation having been given. A considerable number of friends were prexont. Four men of tho late Sir Robert's Company, ia the 57th Regiment, accompanied the hearse* MrLiffiton and two nephews of the deceased woro the chief mourners. • -Chronicle. We had hoped that the report of Major Willis's probable recovery was founded on truth, and regret that our statement made last issue to that effect should hare been ho sadly contradicted. The auction sale by Moaara Halcoral>o and Sherwill of the hay which had bern seized in the matter of Hat bit tie r W. Whisker, and which had been stacked in the Court House yard, took place yesterday. About 30 persons were present. The auctioneer said there were about 14 tons of hay in stacks of about seven tons each, and they would be sold separately and without any reserve. Lot No. 1 was knocked down to Mr Macarthur for £1 17s 6d per ton. He also bid £7 as a lump sum for the second lot. and there being no higher offer, he was declared the purchaser. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a County Cricket Club for the Oroua County was held at the Denbigh Hotel on Saturday evening last. Among the 16 gentlemen who attended were representatives of all parts of the County. After the subject had been freely discussed, it was finally arranged that a club be formed, and that the entrance fee be one guinea. As the ground on which the wicket is now formed in Feilding is central, besides being admirably suited for the purpose, Messrs Sherwill, Lloyd* and Fitz Herbert were appointed att delegates to wait on the agent of the E. and C. Aid Corporation, Mr Macarthur, with the view of obtaining a lease of the piece of land in question, for (he sol>- use of the club. After some further preliminary business having been arranged, the meeting adjourned.
The directions given in fashion journals for crocheting tidies and things are very lively reading, but lack plot. If our ! memory is not at fault, they run somehow this way : Work nine stitches, (urn back ' two stitches in third bar, two single in third s, three chain, B to Q 4th eh., K takes 33, then make eight chain and fasten to cent ro of Q B 7th, loop and turn back, wliifco to play and mate in three stitches. It soems easy enough. To-day's Chronielo says: — We learn that an old and well-known resident of the upper part of tho town, Mr Peoples, on Sunday evening drank a portion of the contents of a bottle of poison known as "rough on rats," narrowly escaping a fatal result. The quantity of the liquid taken by Mr Peoples is not exactly known, beyond that he swallowed two doses, and was nearly dead when found. Dr Tripe was immediately sontfor, and, by prompt and skilful treatment, succeeded in bringing the poor fellow so far round that he is now on the road to recovery. Wo draw the attention of batchers, stock fanners, and others to the stock sale of Messrs Haicombo and Sherwill, which will take place at tho sale yards of that firm in Warwick street on Thursday next. We would more particularly refer to the 25 pure bred 2- tooth Lincoln rams bred by Mr F. Bryce, and the Romney Marsh rams and ewes bred by the late Major Willis. Three Romncy Marsh rams bred by Mr Charles Pharazyn will also be offered. 150 fat sheep will attract the notice of the butchers. Aboul 150 cattle will also be brought under tho hammer, and as they are all of prime quality wo expect to sec an improvement in the prices for beef.
