**" ' The total number of children attending j State schools in the colony, during the year ISBI, was 4:1,468 boys, and 40,092 | girls ; total, 83,560, showing an increase over the attendance during the year 1880 of 1,159 of both sexes. In making the comparison between this year's statistics of the ages of the children at the schools and those of last pear, the children under five years old are thrown out of account. The total number of schools open at the end of 1881 was 869, and the average attendance of the last quarter, 64.944, as against 64,407 for the corresponding quarter in 1880. The average attendance at the Feilding school, for 1881, was 183 scholars.
