THE EGYPTIAN CRISIS.

TnE prompt action of the Gladstone j Government in relation to the Egyptian ! question is a direct refutation of the ; taunts thrown at the English Premier \ for want of energy and courage, and j scatters to the winds the charge of " vaillation" so frequently made by certain colonial journals. Whatever may be the outcome of the present crisis (and there are many who belicye Russian intrigue to be at the bottom of the whole affair), the Gladstone Government, by ; its prompt action on the present occasion, ; has met with the approval of the leading Powers of Europe, as it will also undoubt- '. edly receive the cordial support of the Liberal Press of England and the great ! bulk of the British taxpayers. Although ; the French Government recently obtained a war vote to meet its naval expenses in connection with the present crisis, it is somewhat strange that she should at the last moment withdraw from taking any active part therein, and take up the position of a neutral power, particularly when it is considered that the interests at stake are almost equally shared between England and France. From present appearances the conflict promises to be of short duration. We sincerely hope future results will justify this view ; but should the crisis lead to European com- | plications, and England become involved therein, we are quite sure the present j Government wiil keep unsullied the anj cient prestige of the Mother Country. i Further intelligence will be anxiously i looked for.
