By this timo the flames had obtained complete mastery of the buildl ing, so that the attention of the Fire ' Brigade was directed to preventing the [ flames spreading. Captain and Mrs [ Kitchener saved themselves and baby by dashing through front window on to the * verandah and jumping therefrom, while two children also made their passage through the windows, and wee -saved hy jumping into the arms of Constable Dwver. The servant girl escaped by means of the b-ick stairs. After the fire hod been extinguished, some of the firemen ascended to the upstair portion, and and found the charred remains of the back stab's. After the firo had been extinguished, some of the fL'euien ascended to lhe upstiir portion, and found tlie charred remaias of lhe three eldest children in the centre of the floor, jnst above the d'ning-room. Captaiu Kitchener, who lately came f.-om Palmerslon to Duucd-'i, is almost frantic with grief at the loss of his children. His princif)a.l injuries are severe cuts about the lands. Latek. Large sums were collected on Saturday for the assistance of the victims of the fire. Captain Kitchener and his infant are dangerously ill. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. The jurv expressed an opinion that i onstable Dwyer is deserving of praise for his exertions in saving life.
