Replying to questions, it was stated that two prisoners had been detained in the gaol at Invercargill, awaiting trial, since Eebruary last. — They were unable to find, bail, and, without additional ■ judges, the sittings of the Supreme Court at Invercargill could not be provided for oftner than at present — Gov- * ernment looked upon the appointment of i a Ministry for Agriculture as an import- > ant matter, and had the question of appointing another Minister under consideration. — The propriety of offering the same facilities for travelling by rail on i Wednesdays as on Saturdnys would be i considered, along with other proposals of 1 a similar kind now before the depart- i ment. « The following Bills were introduced 1 and read a first time : To render the persons or companies insuring property against fire for a contribution towards water supply (Mr Hutchison.) To regulate the disposal of pastoral land of the Crown (Sir George Grey.) Mr Fish moved the committal of the Otago Harbor Board Empowering Bill — Mr Macandrew objected to the Bill, ; and insisted that it required modifica- , tion. — Mr Rolleston supported the Bill, ■ but suggested that the sum asked for ! should be reduced from £300,000 to ; £200,000. The House went into committee on the Eight Hours Bill, which was reported with amendments, making it simply an affirmation of the eight hours' system.
