FACE THEFT CHARGES CASES AT PAPAKURA Two Maori soldiers in uniform appeared at tlie Papakura Court to face charges of theft. Both pleaded guilty. Peehi Ward was charged with stealing a coal valued at £1 10s and a singlet valued at 10s at Te Puia Springs in June last. Sergeant T. H. Dyer said accused was employed at a sheep station and shared a whare with another man. He was now a member.of the Maori Battalion in Hie Papakura camp. Accused had no explanation to make. It was stated that the property had been recovered. The Magistrate fined Ward £2 10s. Ben Kingston of the Maori Battalion was charged that he received £1 10s 6d at Wairoa, Ilawkes’ Bay, knowing at the time the money was stolen. Kingston was convicted and discharged and told by Mr Levien not to associate in such doubtful company in future.
