LONG CYCLE RIDE

POKENO TO KARAPiRO CONSCIENTIOUS PUBLIC WORKS OFFICER Much has been written regarding the apathy of civil servants and their laclc of enthusiasm for work. For this reason the following- incident, is well worthy of note. An "officer of the Public Works Department was due to resume duty last Monday at the Karapiro hydro-electric works, and made arrangements with a friend to drive him from his home in Pokeno on Sunday. At 9.30 p.m. that day the officer realised that bis friend was proving not to be one in need, and that some other means of transport was necessary. Being a man of action, the officer concerned requisitioned his son’s push bike, loaded it with his suit-case, tennis racquet, and overcoat, and set off on his 66 miles ride. Six and a half hours later a very weary officer arrived at Karapiro ready to start work, and positive the road maps grossly under-estirnate the distance from Pokeno to Karapiro.
