NEWS FROM ABROAD DAY TO DAY INCIDENTS HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE CABLES Following is a summary of news from the war zones and other sources:— Aprii 17: Allied forces, mainly English and Canadians, land in Norway. Town of Narvik recaptured from Germans. _ Navy and Air Force co-oper-ate. Germans said lo he engaged in operations aiming at Ihe creation of a. ring around Oslo. France pledges herself lo aid Norway with all her available resources. Norway betrayed from within; Nazis use traitors.
Pocket battleship Admiral Von Sclieer, reported to have been extensively damaged and will be out of commission for some time.
Germany’s naval losses in recent battles reported lo lie extensive. Authoritative circles suggest that Germany's fleet now comprises one battlecruiser, possibly one pocket battleship, one light cruiser, JJ destroyers and half the number of U-boats she had at outbreak of war. Eighteen vessels sunk in Norway campaign. '
Sweden prepares to resist attack. . R.A.F. again raids Stavanger aerodrome.
Hands off Netherlands East Indies says Japan. Status quo must be maintained there.
April 18: Fierce fighting In Norway; Allied troops gain ground; German retreat at Narvik.
German troops ilown by air from Denmark to Norway.
Canada may occupy Greenland; everything depends on German action. Western neutrals fear invasion: all prepared for lightning attack. Careful watch on foreigners being kept. British forces occupy Faroe islands.
Possible coup by some foreign power in Yugoslavia. Population nervous. Big influx of “tourists”: Nazi’s abusive speech.
Ban on export of Rumanian oil denied.
Confirmation of Germany’s naval losses reported. German attack on British on Western Front fails with heavy losses.
Shooting of Nazi Chief of Police, Herr Himmler, denied.
Leader of German naval forces at Narvik killed in action.
