NEW PARISH HALL
DEDICATED AND OPENED CENTRE OF SOCIAL-ACTIVITIES The old Anglican church which has served as the Parish liall for The last few years had been completely reconstructed, and transformed!,into an up-to-date hall which, in future, will serve as the centre of practically all the Parish’s social activities. For some weeks past carpenters, assistecf by working bees, have been engaged carrying out the work, the result being one of the best appointed halls in the borough. After Evensong on Sunday, the vicar, choir and congregation assembled in the new’ building for the purpose of the dedication, ceremony which was carried out by the Vicar,■ the Rev. A. E. Prebble.
On Monday evening the hall was officially opened, when a social took place. Dancing was indulged in, the music being played by Air and Mrs T. H. Midgley. Songs by Mr 11. Wall were also appreciated, while Mr A. Grace of Auckland, entertained with card- and rope tricks and magic. An 'enjoyable, huffet supper was served in the cosy supper room, during which a beautifully iced birthday cake made and donated. by Mrs W. Bayly, was cut by Mrs ,H. Curd. The Vicar referred Jo the splendid work carried out, by a band of willing ■ helpers under the direction of the ;clerk of works, Mr H. Curd, and extended to them the thanks of the parishioners. In thanking Mr Ted Wood for his untiring efforts, Mr Prebble pointed out that although Mr Wood was employed from Monday to Friday and paid for his services on those days, he was always o* 1 deck on Saturdays to play his part along with members of the working bees. His services on Saturdays were.*' given gratuitously and in appreciation of this he asked Mr Wood to accent an electric toaster and with it the thanks of all for his. advice and supervision. Messrs Curd and Wood were, accorded an ovation. Mr Prebble mentioned that members of other churches had also given assistance and they were accorded a vote of thanks. On Wednesday evening the senior girls’ club held a successful dance in the hall. Despite the inclement weather there was a large attendance and an enjoyable time was spent. Excellent music was supplied by Holt’s orchestra—Mr and Mrs T. H. Midgley (pidno) / Mr <’L. Holt , (saxophone ; and piaho-accordelon) and;Mr J. 'MacPhersoh: (drums). An extra was piayed by: Miss Myrtle Holt and Mr J. Davenport was master of ceremonies. i: :
