PUNI NEWS

ANNUAL SCHOOL PICNIC HELD AT SANDSPIT, WAIUKU The annual Puni school picnic was held at the Sandspit, Waiuku, on Monday last. The morning dawned bright and clear and by to a large and enthusiastic party left the- school. After reaching the picnic ground about 10 o'clock Ihe children ran races on the dry sand until about 11.30 when they were given lunch under the blue gum trees. During the afternoon many children and adults enjoyed a swim, while others played games on the grassy area near the beach. At afternoon tea, the headmaster, Mr F. J. Lownsborough; thanked the parents, members of the staff and the school committee for their loyal co-opera-tion and untiring efforts in making the function such a success.

Mr E. B. .Tones (chairman of the school committee) also thanked all who had contributed both financially and also by donating cakes towards the picnic. POKENO NOTES SOCIAL EVENING MARRIED COUPLE WELCOMED In spite of unfavourable weather conditions there was a large gathering at ihe welcome home tendered to Mr and Mrs Charles Halford, on the occasion of their marriage, held in the Pokeno hall on Saturday night. The function took the form of a dance. Holt's orchestra supplied Ihe music and Mr P. Harris ably carried out the duties of master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss C. Dean and Mr F. Kelsall. Miss N. Rodgers gave a tap dance. During an interval Mr .1. Dean asked Mr and Mrs Halford to accept a cheque as a small token of the esteem in which they are held and appreciation of the willing assistance Mr Halford had given social functions held in the hall, of which he had been a trustee for several years, and in connection with the football club and the returned soldiers’ association. Mr Dean said all joined in wishing Mrs and Mr Halford every happiness and success for the future. Mi- Halford thanked Mr Dean and those present for the happy evening tendered to Mrs Halford and himself, also for the gift. He said any service he had rendered for the public benefit had been, a pleasure to him and he would be pleased to give any help he could at any future time. Mrs Gough presented Mrs Halford with a beautiful bouquet. A dainty supper was provided by a committee of ladies. Dancing was carried on until midnight. Personal Mr A. Mcßobbie has again entered the Auckland hospital for further treatment to his leg. Airs Lilly and her small son, who have been spending a holiday in Christchurch, returned home last week. Aliss E. McTlroy, of the staff of the Farmers’ Trading Co., is on annual leave and is visiting the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington.
