Affairs of the Pukekohe Borough.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL GENERAL BUSINESS DAIRY FACTORY WATER SUPPLY Advice was received by the Pukekohe Borough Council on Wednesday evening from the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, Hamilton, that it had agreed to pay £52 per annum for the right to take water from Hickey’s Springs, for its requirements at the Paerata dairy factory. The necessary legal documents are to be prepared.
There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Routly), Messrs G. T. Parvin, P. T. Field, F. J. Morrow, G. 11. Armstrong, R. Diggle, W. 11. Adams, A. F. Brown, together with the town clerk (Mr W. T. Cheeseman). and the foreman (Mr S. J. Clews). An apology for absence was receiver! from Mr F. W. Stembridge, who was indisposed. Accounts totalling £3568 6s lid were passed for payment.
The headmaster of the Pukekohe Primary School, Mr F. McGrath, thanked the council for the free use of the
municipal baths during February, and advised thal over 50 children had been taught lo swim. The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, Auckland, advised that Ihe Department was now prepared to contribute £214 9s —half of the estimated cost of installing a four-inch water main to the railway houses in Birch road. —It was decided to thank the District Engineer for his offer, and to intimate that at the moment, the council’s financial position would not permit of the work being undertaken, but that the council intended bringing down proposals for a water extension scheme at an early date, and that the provision of a four-inch main to Birch road would be included. The Auckland Bird Lovers’ Club asked for a donation toward the annual picnic for orphans.—lt was decided to contribute £1 Is. The medical officer of health, Auckland, advised that a bacteriological examination of a sample of borough water had proved satisfactory. Primary Schools’ Request
The Pukekohe primary school committee asked the council to consider . tar-sealing Queen street to its full width opposite the school entrance for the convenience of buses conveying children to the school and for the safely of the children. The committee also asked that the footpath past the school entrance he formed up before the winter. —Referred t,o the works committee with power to act. , The Internal Affairs Department advised of the formation of a district committee in pursuance of 1 lie powers vested in the Minister under the provisions of Section 10 of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, 1937. Mr H. M. Titchmarsh, Birch road, offered about an acre of land necessary for a stock route (between Birch road and East street, fringing the eastern side of Rooseville park) at £IOO, the council to dedicate, fence, form and metal the road and provide entrances to Mr Titchmarsh’s property. The offer was accepted, and his suggestion about a footpath along Birch road to Station road, was noted. In view of the fact that the new road would give frontage to Railway Department property and open up a number of saleable sections, it was decided to enquire if the Department would make a contribution toward the cost of the work.
The Transport Department thanked the council for its co-operation in connection with the road safety campaign, and expressed a hope that the council’s assistance would continue.
The Health Inspector, Mr R. J. McGee, reported having carried out 08 sanitary inspections and serving three requisitions in connection with plumbing and drainage. Five samples had been taken under the sale of Food and Drugs Act, all complying with the regulations.
