RUGBY FOOTBALL

PAEROA’S CLOSE WIN CONTEST WITH MANUKAU Before a large attendance on the Railway Reserve at Papakura on Saturday, the Paeroa Rughy Union representatives, after a keenly contested game, defeated the Manukau Suhunion representatives by 12 points to 10. The game was even and willing throughout and provided many thrills for the spectators. The teams were well-matched and during the first half neither side had any advantage. The half-time score gace Manukau a five to three lead. The home side’s score came from a try—a good piece of work by Pountney, Ilalliwell converting. For the visitors Fisher kicked a penalty goal.

Opening up in the second half, each side strove hard to secure an advantage and the game became keener. I-lalliwell for Manukau, was magnificent on defence. With only about 15 minutes to go Pemberton score an unconverted try in the corner to place Paeroa in the lead. Manukau now were putting a lot of dash into their play, and I-lalliwell dummied his way through for a good try in a handy position which he had no difficulty in converting himself. Ilis was a brilliant .piece of work. The score was now 7 : Manukau 10, Paeroa 6. With time drawing very close, Pemberton dived over for Paeroa who were now only one point behind. Unfortunately Manukau were penalised for offside play, Fisher making a great kick from 30 yards out near the side line and raised the flags to give his side victory by 12 points to 10. Prominent for Manukau were I-lalli-wcll, Glasgow, dagger, Pountney and Kidd, while for Paeroa Fisher, Hannon. Miller, Morrison, Wallace and Godwin were ahvays going well. In a curtain raiser Pukekohe juniors 28 (tries by S. Wright (5), Ingram and Best, while Wright and Boulton each converted one), heat Manukau 3, a penally goal by Goombes. Members of the Paeroa team were subsequently entertained to dinner at the Papakura hotel when the usual toasts were honoured.
