CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

THE SEASON OPENED SATURDAY NIGHT’S FUNCTION The first Ingleside of the Franklin and District Caledonian Society for the 1938-39 season was held in the Oddfellows’ hall, Pukekohe, on Saturday night and was an unqualified success. Again the need of a larger hall was evident. The new chief, Mr G. Craig, was duly piped in by Piper McLean and the visitors by Piper McKellow of Auckland. Mrs Crawford of Onewhero. sang “Caller Herrin” and “Blue Bird of Happiness.” Her accompaniment was played by Mrs E. J. Campbell. The Irish Jig was danced by Dawn I owrie, .Tenner Adams and Noeline Schlaepfer; the Highland Fling by Raymond Lowrie, Betty Booth and Maureen Adams; the Sean Triubhais by Maureen Adams, Brown, and Betty Booth. A short sketch, “The Skipper’s Entanglement,” was presented by the society’s dramatic club in costume. The difficult situation in which an amorous Scotch skipper found himself and was solved by the shrewdness of a deck hand he had dismissed, was the theme of the play. The hearty laughter evoked was sufficient evidence that the various characters were well sustained. Mrs M. Sutton in the part of the housekeeper, when told “She needna wait,” and with a sniff said, “As if I’d want tae,” brought down the house. Mrs R. L. Johnson was “Martha.” “She didna want ony huggin’ or kissin’ or things like that.” “Pansy Face,” Mrs A. J. Robertson, who had a passion not only for the skipper but cream cakes, and finally vented her anger on being done out of a husband by throwing them over him. Other charac|irs were: Mr D. Scott, the

Mr G. Craig, his mate; and Roy Johnstone, the deck hand, who solved the skipper’s problem. Air J. Alcßobbie was M.C. and Alessrs Rose on the piano and Watt on the accordeon supplied music with lilt and rhythm. It is the intention of the society to form a pipe band at an early date.

The ladies’ committee as usual, supplied a bountiful supper.
