REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT
MOVE BY MEN’S BROTHERHOOD
ADDRESS BY AIRS R. G. GLARK
Evidence of tiie sustained interest in (lie activities of the Pukekohe Alen’s Brotherhood was provided at the monthly meeting on Wednesday, held ia the Dainty tea-rooms when lunch lmd to be served in relays to cater for the large attendance. The Rev. J. Pattison presided and extended a welcome to the speaker, Airs It. G. Glark, llie Rev. H. 11. Jeffreys of Auckland, past-president of the Brotherhood, Air Lex Grieves of Auckland, and oilier visitors.
Airs Clark gave an illuminating address on tiie Alaori bousing problem and outlined representations that had been made to the Prime Alinister by herself, Airs C. G. Revell and other interested parlies to alleviate the present unsatisfactory situation. She urged the Brotherhood to give its support in advancing the matter. On the motion of Air D. AlcCready Armstrong, Airs Clark was accorded a vote of Blanks.
It was unanimously decided to forward a letter to the Prime Minister requesting the Government's support in the Alaori housing matter. A motion ol' sympathy and the wish that he he speedily restored to health, moved by Air J. Patterson, w r as passed in respect- of tiie critical illness of Mr E. Allan of Buckland, a foundation member of the Brotherhood. Air N. G. Winter intimated that be bad been approached by various businessmen to form a businessmen’s gymnasium class. Those interested were invited to attend a meeting in his rooms.
A discussion ensued on tiie cultural advancement of Pukekohe and the necessity to have an up-to-date lib- V rary. It was pointed out by Mr Clark ‘ J that the Government had funds available for subsidising libraries but it appeared to be apathy on the part of those concerned in Pukekohe in not availing themselves of the offer. It was staled by Mr Armstrong that the public library had recently been restocked with many new non-fictional works. Air H. K. Clayton remarked that it was not possible to improve on the present, premises until a loan was passe'd. The library had suffered in tiie past owing to lack of money.
