Radio Telephones on Service Vehicles.

POWER BOARD PLAN.

AUTHORITY GIVEN TO OPERATE.

AVAVE-LENGTH OF 182 METRES. Advice was received at this week’s meeting of the Franklin Power Board that the Post and Telegraph Department had agreed to the use of radiotelephones provided the regulations were complied with. The engineer, Mr L. G. Sharp, mentioned that he intended applying for a temporary licence for the board to operate on a wave-length of 182 metres on condition that this wave-length proved satisfactory. Previous tests’ which were highly satisfactory had been made on an 80 metres wave length, but this had been allotted to amateur transmitting stations. The matter of making final arrangements was left to Mr Sharp. It will be recollected that in February last when storms caused widespread dislocation of telephone and power services, some difficulty / was experienced in establishing communication with certain districts. Later a satisfactory two-way radio-telephone communication between the power board’s service trucks and the depot was established by means of portable transmitting sets from as far as Orua bay and Whakatiwai districts. The tests proving satisfactory the engineer recommended the hoard to instal portable transmitting and receiving sets in the depot and service vans, and the recommendation .was approved.
