Cricket at Bledisloe Park on Sundays.

COUNCIL’S DECISION.

A GOOD, CLEAN SPORT.

PLAY FROAI 11.15 ONWARDS

Permission to play cricket at Bledisloe park on Sundays between 11.15 a.m. and 0.30 p.m., was granted the Pukekohe Cricket Association by the Pukekohe Borough Council, on Wednesday evening. Messrs A. M. Rose (president) and G. AV. J. Lawrie (secretary) waited' on the council and pointed out that it was not proposed to conduct an organised competition, but simply to invite outside teams to Pukekohe so the local men could reciprocate some of the hospitality extended them when they visited.

Answering a question. Air Rose said there would be no drink on the ground. They did not have drink on Saturdays, so why should they have it on Sundays, he added. The Mayor, Mr C. K. Lawrie, in moving that permission be granted, said that three years ago he would have opposed the request tooth and nail but today conditions had changed somewhat. Golf, tennis, bowls, football and all sorts "07 games and sport were indulged in on Sundays. He did not know that he would play on Sundays but they had to recognise that whether the council granted permission or not to play on Bledisloe park, the young would play cricket somewhere. In the past they had played a number of games at Waiau Pa. Cricket, He pointed out, was a good clean sport and youag fellows were better playing such a game than standing about the streets., Mr F. W. Stembridge seconded the motion.

An amendment moved by Mr G. H. Armstrong, and seconded by Mr H. K. Clayton, that The hours of play be from 12.15 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., was defeated, only the mover and seconder voting for it. The Mayor’s motion was carried.
