Friendly Tennis Match at Pukekohe.
METHODIST TEAM BEATEN. WIN FOR KARAKA SOUTH. In beautiful weather a friendly tennis match was played on Saturday last between the Pukekohe Methodist Club and Karaka South on the former’s courts. Details are as follows, Methodist names first:— Ladies’ singles: Miss Laybourne lost to Miss M. Mansell, I—6; Miss L. Mitchell lost to Miss F. Bycroft, o—6; Men’s singles: W .Seed lost to G. Fulton, 5—9; B. Elliott beat T. Totty, 9—-6. Ladies’ doubles: Misses Laybourn and Mitchell lost to Misses Mansell and F. Bycroft, 3-—6; Mesdames Jeffreys and Schofield lost to Misses E. and L. Bycroft, 2-—6; Misses A. Mitchell and McKinney beat Miss Sim and Mrs Pussell, 6—-3. .Men's doubles: Seed and Elliott lost to Fulton. and Totty, 6 —9; Laybourne and Jeffreys lost to G. Mansell and Illsley, 69: Sutcliffe and Davies ; lost to C. Mansell and Long, 6 —9. Combined doubles: Laybourn and Mrs Jeffreys lost to G. Mansell and Miss E. Bycroft, 5 —7 ; Jeffreys and Mrs Schofield beat Long and Miss L. Bycroft, 72; Sutcliffe and Miss A. Mitchell lost to C .Mansell and Miss Sim. 6 —7: Davis and Miss McKinney v. Illsley and Mrs Pussell (unfinished). Result: Karaka 10, Methodist-3. The most interesting and exciting game was that between Laybourn and Mrs Jeffreys against G .Mansell and Miss E .Bycroft. The former appeared to have the game well won when they led s—love,5 —love, but they were eventually defeated by o—7. All four players played well but the fortunes of war went the way of the visitors. . A dainty light refreshment brought to a close a most enjoyable afternoon’s sport.
