JUNIOR BRANCH MEETING

There was a splendid attendance, including two new members and a visitor, at the meeting of the Pukekawa junior branch of the women’s division last week. An interesting programme was arranged lor the next six months.

A dramatic circle has been formed with the view to joining the Auckland branch of the British Drama League at a future date.

A demonstration by Mrs Hawke on making pictures lrom chocolate papers proved most interesting. Several finished pictures were much admired. Last Week’s Meeting. The fact that Mrs Mason, leader of the gardening circle, intimated that the circle intended having a small competition each month, was omitted from the report of last week’s meeting of the senior branch of the women’s division. The points competition for six pieces of shortbread, judged by Mesdames Hunter and Greer, resulted in a win for Mrs Mason, with Mrs Wells second and Mrs Elwin third.

Card Evening.

To raise funds for the hall, a card party was held on Saturday evening. While there was a fair attendance, the number was disappointing. The prize winners were Mrs Lindberg and Mr H. H. Geraghty.

AKA AKA NEWS. FOOTBALLERS’ DANCE. The dance held by the Aka Aka Rugby Football Club last week attracted a large attendance and proved most enjoyable. Hulme’s orchestra provided the music, Miss W. Goodwright and Mr R. Wilson contributing extras. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss L. P'otier and Mr V. Shuker, and the winner of the cake donated by Mrs T. P. McNamara was Mr C. Kitson. Messrs G. Sullivan and B. Hull were masters of ceremonies. buckland notes. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ DANCE. Buckland members of the Franklin Returned Soldiers’ Association held a dance in the Buckland hall on Satuiday evening in aid of the distress fund.

There was a good attendance ot young people who thoroughly enjoyed dancing. Card players were made comfortable by a cosy log fire. Allan’s orchestra provided music'. The M’s.G. were Messrs J. S. Wilcox (Puni) and G. McPherson (Pukekohe). The mystery dance was won by Mr 11. Jamieson and Miss E. Holland, and a Monte Carlo waltz by Miss V. Greenway and Mr G. Gray. The winners of cards were Mrs F. McKean, senior, and Mr J. C. Wiggins.

Supper arrangements were in the hands of the returned soldiers’ wives, whose willing attention evoked much praise. KARAKA NOTES. A FAREWELL FUNCTION. A very pleasant evening was spent in the Karaka hail last Thursday, when the Karaka Tennis Club held a dance to hid farewell to Miss Flora Kidd on the eve of her departure for Kawhia to lake up nursing.

Mr F. Colbeck, president of the club, in making a presentation to Miss Kidd, spoke very highly of her services as a member of the team, and the help she had given in all social functions.. He said he was sure she would be greatly missed by all members. Mr Colbeck then asked Miss Kidd to accept a suitcase as a token of the esteem with which she was held by the members.

Mr Kidd suitably replied thanking Ihe president and members for the good wishes extended to his daughter. The company then joined in singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mrs Greenwood supplied the dance music and Mr R. Carpenter ably carried out the duties of M.C. Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr and Mrs R. Jolly, and Miss E. Grant and Mr Mansell. The evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” MERCER NOTES. WEEKLY EUGIIRE PARTY. At the weekly euchre evening conducted by the combined cricket and tennis clubs of Mercer, Mrs Gunson was the successful lady and Mr J. Hodgson won the men’s prize. The hidden numbers were drawn by Mrs G. Neill and Mr E. B. Morey respeclivelv. Owing to sickness and influenza being prevalent in the district several regular patrons were absent. Town Board Meets. The chairman, Mr F. J. Freeborn, presided at the monthly meeting of the Mercer Town Board, held last Monday evening. The chairman reported that tar sealing contracts had been completed and the town hoard was financial.

There were no loans to meet and no outstanding accounts. Mr A. Glass’ resignation was accepted as he is leaving the district to take up residence at Dargaville. A contract has been let to the Boose Shipping Company to build a landing stage on the Mercer side of the Waikato river near the town, and work will commence shortly. The ferry is already built and it is proposed to run a service across the river similar to the one in operation at Pipiroa, near

Thames. A vote of thanks was accorded the president of the Mercer branch of the W.D.F.U. for the excellent treat given to the children on the occasion of the King’s silver jubilee. mauku notes. Mr and Mrs A. Adams and family arc at present the guests of Mr and Mrs E. Cartwright, Union road. Miss Ada Cartwright returned home on Saturday after an extended visit to the Bay of Plenty. Miss Jean Cot,man of Dominion road, Auckland, is at present the guest of Mr and Mrs H. Bree, Mauku. The many friends of Mr TL Twidle, who is at present an inmate of the Auckland hospital, will he pleased to learn that he is progressing favourably. WAIAU PA NEWS. The card evening held in Waiau Pa hall on Thursday last, was largely attended The prizes were won by Mrs J. Boyd and Mr B. Farley.
