Sports Meeting Held at Pukekawa.

A SUCCESSFUL DAY. HUNTER’S CUP TO G F. McINNES. SUCCESS OF A. THOMAS. The Pukekawa Athletic Club’s annual sports meeting took place on Saturday on Mr K. D. Orr’s property. Perfect weather conditions prevailed. The atendance was the largest for some years, proving the popularity of the club. A feature of the programme was the unusually large number of entries for the mounted events. The open hunters’ competition, carrying £9 in prize money, and a silver cup. attracted 14 entries from as far as Rangiriri, Waiuku and Maramarua and the standard of jumping, according to the judge, Mr A. S. Sutherland of Ngaruawahia, was very creditable. G. F. Mclnnes’ Peter was awarded first place. The j maiden hunters’ event was another which attracted wide attention and was won by C. Rowe's Jimmy. The most successful horseman was A. Thomas who gained first places in the novelty gallop, necktie race and stockmen’s competition. The Pukekawa cup, the chief athletic event, was won by S. Harris, while the mile event was won by the virtual scratch man, W. Preston, in convincing style. The veteran miler, J. McKean, also competed, but retired. With a larger patronage, a large increase in entries, particularly the mounted events, and excellent organising by the officials, the fixture was a pronounced success socially and financially. An example of the efficiency of the committee was the promptness with which each event was run off and ] there was not the slightest hitch throughout. The presentation of trophies was made by the president, Mr L. J. McGuire, to G. F. Mclnnes, winner of the open hunters’ competition; G. Foxi, winner of the Chapman cup. 440 yards handicap; S. Harris, winner of 150 yards open handicap; Onewhero school, winners of the relay race.
