Happenings in Country Districts.

ITEMS OF INTEREST. , ONEWHERO NEWS. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY. ; Advantage was taken by members of the Onewhero branch of the women’s division on a recent evening, to honour the coming-of-age of Miss R.. Dyer, who is at present spending her vocation wth her parents. Miss Dyer was the first junior member of the branch.

The party was held in the supper * room of the hall and was spent in competitions and dancing. Miss Dyer was presented with two pretty bouquets, one from the members (by little Thelma Tout), and one from the children (by little Betty and Ruth Muir). A lucky parcel competition, which evoked much amusement, was won by the guest of honour. The points prize was won by Mr G. MoKinney and Miss Dyer. Mrs R. N. Crawford and Mr G. Flint provided the 1 dance music. The birthday cake, made by Mrs Dyer, was adorned with 21 kewpies and cut by the guest of honour, who distributed it to the gathering. The members complimented Miss Dyer on having taken up the nursing profession at the Auckland hospital.

GLENMURRAY NOTES. MEETING OF SPORTS CLUB. FIXTURE ON JANUARY 19. The presdient, Mr 0. McCutchan, presided oyer an enthusiastic attendance at the annual, meeting of the Glenmurray Sports Club held recently.

The balance sheet showed a sniall loss on the year’s, operations, but the position of the club considered satisfactory as the building of the pavilion was a non-recurring debt. The club has a credit balance of £4O.

It was resolved to make application to the Minister of Internal Affairs for a permit to hold horse-galloping events.

It was* decided to hold the annual sports on Saturday, January 19.

The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr D. S. Reid, M.P.; president, Mr 0. McCutchan; vice-presidents. Messrs K. L. Caldwell, J. S. Dauberry, U. C. Allen, A. J. P'aulsen,'A. H. Gaslcell, H. Leigh, A. Rodgers, J. McNaughton, J. L, Watson, H. B. Sorby, , S. B. Insoll, C. Roose, A. C. Saxton, J. R. Lowry, E. Gilmour, H. L. Grey and L. R. Lowry; administrative and protest committee, Messrs McCutchan, Allen, Watson, Murray, Caldwell, Paulsen and D. K. Maloney. Last year’s committee was re-elected.

MERCER NEWS. \ ; ■ ' ... - R.S.A. EUCHRE. There was another large attendance at last week’s card party arranged by the returned soldiers. The first prizes were carried off by Mrs Fleming and Mr McGruer, and hidden number prizes by Mrs W. G. Graham and Mr Hammond. A friendly tennis match was played at Mercer recently between Mercer and Mangatawhiri clubs. The home team proved the wdnner by eight sets to six. Details are, Mercer names first:— Ladies’ singles: Miss J. Graham beat Miss E. Mcllroy, 6—4; Miss B. Woods beat Miss J. McKenzie, 6—l. Ladies* doubles: Misses J. Graham and B. Woods beat Misses E. Mcllroy nad J. McKenzie, 6 —5; Mesdames Shadbolt and Pryor-beat Misses F. Twining and iO. Eendergrast, 6—5; Mesdames Prattley and Fenton lost to Misses K. and D. Parker, 5—6. Men’s singles: H. Skeen lost to R. Drummond,: 6 —9; H. Glass lost to A. H. Pope, B—9. Men’s doubles: H. Skeen and H. Glass beat R. Orummond and A. H. Pope, 9 —5; R. Barron and P. Lowther beat D. McClay and B. Allingham, 9—7; L. Power and E. Scott lost to V. Parker and H. Vanse, 5 —9. Combined doubles : Mrs Shadbolt and R. Barron lost to Miss F. Twining and D. McClay, 47; Mrs Pryor and P. Lowther beat Miss 0. P'endergrast and B. Allingham, 7—3; Mrs Prattley and L. Power lost to Miss K. Parker and V. Parker, 57: Mrs Fenton and E. Scott beat Miss D. Parker and H. Vanse, 7-r-4.

OTAUA NEWS. TENNIS CLUB’S DANCE. The Otaua Tennis Club held a very jolly dance in the Otaua hall recently, there being a large attendance. Music was played by Mrs Goodwright. Misses I. Haysom; W. Goodwright, Messrs Bishop and R. Wilson." A’ novelty dance was won by Miss D. Dickey and Mr R. Bright.
