Nothing Like Wool.

m DEFECTS OF SUBSTITUTES. An X-ray study of sheep's wool and cellulose fibres has been made by Dr. S. G. Barker, director of research of the Wool Industries Research Association, to demonstrate their internal differences in composition and structure. His examination shows that sheep's wool and cellulose fibres | are two entirely different substances, i and that there is no justification whatever for the product of cellulose fibres being marketed under the name of artificial wool. It is clear, he says, that in the present state of knowledge of molecular science, a structure so complex and beautiful as that of sheep's wool cannot be imitated or produced in any form. Recounting some of its advantages over other substances, Dr Barker mentions that wool is the best insulator for heat; it is light, elastic, durable and strong; it transmits the health-giving ultra-violet rays; it forms the ideal wear for the , human body, as it generates heat in itself, and is designed by Nature as | the bodily protection of an animal next its skin; it absorbs watqr more readily than any other textile fibre, ! and has no tendency to deposit mois- | ture on the skin with consequent dis- i comfort to the wearer and liability j to catch cold with small changes in j atmospheric conditions. Wool is al- ! most non-inflammable, and finally, it can be felted, an inherent quality not ; possessed by any cellulose fibre. As no artificial product possesses the qualities of sheep's wool, it is con- j tended that the use of the term ■ " wool" in association with any other product but real wool should not be permitted. j • i
