MAORIS' DOGS.
ARE THEY TO BE TAXED. PIAKO COUNCIL TAKING ACTION. Arc Maoris obliged by law to pay clog license fees .just Llie same as palceha dog owners? This question is likely to be settled by means of a lest case in the Magistrate's Court, for. it was stated at j Monday's meeting of the Piako County Council that one Maori landowner near Waharoa had declined to pay the dog tax and expressed bis willingness to be prosecuted by the County Council in order to test the matter. The clerk reported that the dog registrar bad complained that one Maori near Waharoa would not pay. The county solicitor was consulted, and as a result the Maori was warned that the council would prosecute. The Maori had replied that he would engage counsel and fight the case out. Cr. W. McLean: lie is game anyway. [ was talking to Maoris in my district and they think they have no net 1 -1 to pay dog- tax.
