ERADICATING THE PEST.
COOD WORK BEING DONE
During a conversation with a Times reporter, the stock inspector, Mr C. V. Stuart, mentioned that the Department of Agriculture was Keenly interested in Ihe eradication of ragwort. He said that notices had been served on property owners, where t ragworl had made its appearance to , clear the weed, and these had been followed up and good" work had been done. Farmers were beginning to fully realise the seriousness of the ragwort menace, but it was unfortunate that many had not. until this year when the weed was point.-d out. to I hem. known what ragwort was. Since it was pointed out to them they had worked energetically to keep it in : check. The Department was work- | ing in conjunction with Hie Franklin s County Council in dealing with Crown i and "absentee'* lands. Taking the district its a whole, a real good clean up had taken place, and there had been a good response lo (he notices senl out, i .Mr Stuart said.
Regarding the other pest, rabbits, Mr Stuart said that a number of notices had also been served on land owners and steps were being taken to have |he notices complied with. Rabbits, he added, were fairly plentiful in several parts of the county.
