OBITUARY.

MR'W.'H. PELLOW.

EARLY SETTLER OF ONEWHERO

A pioneer settler of the Onewhero district, in the person of Mr William Henry Pellow, passed away at the Auckland hospital on Tuesday.

He was born at Auckland and when a young man, was in the employ of Messrs Winstone, Limited. Subsequently he resided with his parents on. their farm at Tuakau. Some 44 years ago, the Grown opened 100acre blocks of land at Onewhero, and in the ballot held at Pukekohe one evening, Mr Pellow, members of the Gathcart, McWhirter, Cummings, Hamilton and other families, who were experienced bushmen, and the sons of early settlers, drew sections. The land was clothed in dense bush and was sold to the settlers on easy terms. Grossings of the Waikato river were made in a punt, and from'the southern bank to their holdings, the settlers had to carry their provisions on their backs. The journeys were arduous, but like so many of the other early settlers they overcame the difficulties that confronted them. Mr Pellow made a success of his venture and in after years acquired three other blocks which were divided into separate farms. In 1896, he married Miss Isabella Brownlee, of Pukekohe. Mrs Pellow passed away on Ghristmas day. eight years ago.

He is survived by four sons. Messrs William Henry, John. Thomas and Bert Pellow, all of Onewhero. There are four grandchildren. Mr F. Pellow. of Pukekohe. Messrs H. and E. Pellow, of Onewhero.* are brothers.

The funeral, which took place at Onewhero on Thursday, was largely attended. The* service was conducted by. the. vicar of Tuakau, the Rev. E. L. Gartridge. The pall-hearers were Messrs J. and E. Pellow (brothers), H., J. and B. Pellow (sons) and R. J. Brownlee (brother-in-law).
