TUAKAU WORKS.

KERBING AND CHANNELLING. ESTIMATED TO COST £l5O. Proposals for the lcerbing and channelling of George street as far as the Anglican church corner were put forward at Tuesday evening's meeting of the Tualcau Town Board by Mr W. J. Deeble. He reported that the chairman, Mr W. J. Taylor, and he had investigated the matter. It was estimated that the 47 chains could be undertaken for £3 15s a chain and he would not b 3 surprised if it could be done for £3 10s. He was of the opinion that the work should be put in hand as the present state of affairs was a disgrace to the town.

To Mr S. H. Crawford, Mr Deeble said he thought the work could be completed for £l5O. The chairman stressed the fact that the work could not be done out of rates; a loan would be necessary. Mr Deeble said the board would be able to save what had been spent on maintaining highways. The chairman: By the end of the year we may have a bit of a balance and set that off against the work. I cannot see how we can do it now. Mr Deeble: What amount of overdraft can we stand to the end of the year? The chairman replied that it was a matter of rates collected.

Answering Mr Crawford, the chairman stated the board could obtain an overdraft for the amount of rates levied.

Mr Deeble pointed out the cost f maintaining highways was £250 a year, of which sum the town board provided one-quarter, leaving a saving of £l9O. The chairman: That was taken into consideration when the rates were struck.

Mr J. J. Dromgool asked whether one-quarter or one-third of the work could be done, but Mr Deeble expressed disapproval of this suggestion. "We' can do the work; we have the money," remarked Mr Deeble. The chairman (to Mr Deeble) : Will you guarantee it? We will have to leave Dominion road and other roads if the work is to be done.

At the suggestion of the chairman, it was decided to defer consideration until next meeting.
